Scarlett O’Hanna

2014

The profession of the singer-songwriter is one of pop music’s oldest, over more than half a century approximately 739.735 musicians have tried to set their sentiments, personal and political, to music. Aren’t we through with that? one might ask, but since this discipline’s output seems to be particularly connected to the character and personality of the artist, and since artists are people and we can never get enough of interesting people here comes Scarlett O’Hanna from Toulouse! Great name, by the way. Described as a «format-killer», her early EP Cheap Bling Bling, (the cover looks a bit like Patti Smith’s Horses) is mostly instrumental and contains only two songs with vocals . More of that she must have thought, following up with Imposter and recently the brilliant album Romance Floats which is a roller coaster ride of Bon Iver-ish melancholia, Arcade Fiery outbreaks and Regina-Spektor-like minimalism. Altogether it sounds much more like New York than like Toulouse. Like empty red wine bottles and a lot of rolled cigarettes. Like euphoric togetherness and apathic loneliness. And first of all uniquely like Scarlett O’Hanna.
