For over 6 years musicologist Brian Shimkovitz from New York has been feeding his blog with awesome tapes from Africa. What began with the souvenirs from a research year in Ghana has led to a collection of more than 4000 cassettes and makes Brian today one of the most important western multipliers of African music. For that matter geography wins over style: Brian converts tapes of all genres mostly making them available to an international audience for the first time. A wide audience as a quick google search shows: Brian’s blog, which today also functions as a label, appears in magazines from New York Times to Der Spiegel and the archivist travels the world giving notedly danceable introductions to his fantastic collection. His show at Torstraßen Festival brings him back to his interim home base Berlin and we can’t wait for the latest findings!
