Evy Jane

2014

«TRIP-HOP …why can’t people just call this trip-hop?» asks a commentary below Evy Jane’s recent interview with Fact magazine, written by someone slightly dissatisfied with the newly opened category «nocturnal future-R&B-slow-beat-crime-love-step». In German we have the beautiful word verschwurbelt, which, coming up more and more in relation to contemporary R&B productions means convoluted, complicated or labyrinthine (nice word, too). And that’s what is in deed happening with Evy Jane. Everything traditionally meant to be straight-forward in R&B is being hidden and buried under a huge salad of effects. Beats are being delayed and deconstructed, vocals stagger through unmapped territory. And although that now sounds like everything went wrong, this is obviously what we like about it! Evy Jane are Evelyn Mason and Jerimiah Klein from Vancouver. Besides a certain fascination with R.Kelly the duo is snooping around in the UK Bass and Grime scene. The sound aesthetics of Burial or Four Tet are an influence, as is Vancouver neighbor and hyper-pop-producer Claire Boucher aka Grimes. We’re catching Evy Jane on a creative trip to Berlin where they will work on new material to be released by London-based label Ninja Tune and the festival appearance will be their first concert in Berlin. SAYSO has just been awarded with a Best New Track mention for on Pitchfork. Do trust the hype!
