End titles first: The initial chords on debut album Ships Will Come are played with an organ so epic that it could also conclude a James Cameron movie. Then the beat, stoic and sturdy. Then the choir. Hard to remember listening to a record that evokes goosebumps after one minute and 8 seconds only, goosebumps which stay until the album’s last chord. Leipzig-based Warm Grave’s album is like a blackhole, in a second it sucks you in, then darkness spins all around. That this can only get better when performed live is equally clear after 68 seconds. Warm Graves are both monotonous and melodic, minimal and bombastic, supernatural yet godly. It is healing music . Three sky gazers taking off towards the cosmos, a spiritual experience, psychedelic, dulcet within its weight and so outstanding that a whole new category is due. Especially those choirs are breathtaking, blending in from afar, from a cloud probably, while the band is jamming down in the sanctuary. Imagine Spiritualized collaborating with Arvo Pärt, their instrumentation seems minimal: guitar, organ and drums yet their impact is huge.
