Writing the biography of a young band named Deaths does bear a certain irony. Shall this be an obituary? A funeral speech? Quite the opposite is needed for this morbid gang, surely at the very start of a lively career. When we saw Deaths support Night Musik at our warm-up event at Acud, we were so impressed that we did not hesititate to ask them to join the festival line-up. The four members of Deaths – and here’s the story – hail from Russia, Japan, Slovenia and France, yet the band was founded in Berlin. With electronic live drums, synthesizers, bass and a charismatic singer, the ensemble creates exceptionally dynamic pop-songs: contemporary, subtle yet catchy. Reminiscent of bands like Alt-J or The XX, Deaths’ crystalline art-pop is a sparkle in the night and sounds anything but lifeless.
