The fine print on this project’s “Eternal Love” LP reads promising: it was released on Dial, mixed by Renaissance Man’s Ville Haimala, mastered by Rashad Becker, and the cover design was handled by Janus mastermind Dan DeNorch. Dawn Mok describes itself as an open collective with roots in Berlin, Seoul, Virginia, Bangkok, and California. And although the word “ethereal” is no stranger to portraits of this year’s roster, this band is among the very most deserving of the title. Producer Felix Mura, singer Bundi, and pianist Kathy Kwon alchemize pop, ambient, and RnB into situative performance art, creating a subtle and sinuous current of atmospheres that, just as the three musicians’ diverse fields of expertise and characters do, merge into a unified whole. And that’s only the aural component—each track on the album is equipped with a visual collage that then accordingly acts as the backdrop for a live show in the approximate style of a meditation circle—a post-digital sound workshop littered with flowers, incense sticks, and MacBooks.
