In the collective Kairo is Koming, six artists from the Egyptian capital bring together their respective versions of electronic dance music. The group is nothing if not well acquainted with the club; among them is the founder of VENT, the most forward-thinking and adventurous nightlife destination in Cairo. In times of an authoritarian regime, VENT has acted a unique oasis both musically and politically, an almost utopian meeting place for the Egyptian underground. Kairo is Koming is clear evidence that the Egyptian scene is more open, more interesting, and better connected than ever. The collective has made a name for itself internationally with releases on labels like Lee Gamble’s UIQ, Opal Tapes, and Kitsuné, a performance at London’s ICA, lots of features on NTS radio, and collaborations with Red Bull Music Academy. The artists’ live shows are built around a progressive understanding of electronic club music that defies Western or commercial preconceptions of “oriental” aesthetics. After the Kairo is Koming Berlin debut last year and ZULI’s residence at the ACUD club, we’re looking very much forward to this club night, which will feature five of the collective’s members: ZULI, Hussein Sherbini, Bosaina, $$$TAG$$$, and Ismael.
