Strauss moderates a discussion with the artists Anika (UK\/BLN) and AWA (African Woman Arise \/ Zimbabwe) about how environments \u2014 both physical and political \u2014 affect and influence the creation of their music, whether it be through words or music, meaning or mood. In the current political moment we find ourselves in, where does an artist find herself? What exactly is an artist\u2019s relation to a social politics \u2014 does taking a stance in one\u2019s music, advance a cause or turn it into an object to exploit?<\/p>\n<p>Moderated by D.Strauss, freelance journalist and long time festival supporter.<\/p>\n<p><em>Listen to the recording here:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/voicerepublic.com\/embed\/talks\/space-place-politics-how-does-one-s-environment-shape-an-artist-s-worldview\" width=\"445\" height=\"140\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Anika <\/b>(UK\/Berlin)<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anika_(musician)\">en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anika_(musician)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Annika Henderson is a musician, poet and artist who rose to fame as ANIKA with two highly acclaimed eponymous records (Recorded with Geoff Barrow of Portishead and his band Beak&gt;, released on Stones Throw in the US), and was touring the world. She is well known as a DJ too, hosts a radio program on BCR \u2013 Berlin Community Radio, is seen and heard in experimental cinema and collaborates with a variety of Berlin, London, or Mexico City based artists and musicians among them Jandek, Michael Rother (Neu!), Andreas Reihse of Kreidler, T.Raumschmiere (Sleeping Pills and Habits), Doireann O&#8217;Malley, Ricardo Domeneck, Stine Omar \/ Max Boss (EASTER), or Yann Tiersen. She also recently returns from a residency in Tehran, IR where she collaborated with Berlin-based video artist, Phillip Geist for a live video mapping projection, as well as performed at the renowned Tadaex festival. She is due to play ATP Iceland in July.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m0UAqJWzsZE?rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>AWA | African Woman Arise<\/b> (Zimbabwe)<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.torstrassenfestival.de\/awa\/\">www.torstrassenfestival.de\/awa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00bbAwakhiwe Sibanda who is known on stage as A.W.A (African Women Arise) is a 24-year-old female emcee and a vocalist from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. She started rapping in 2012 and released songs in Ndebele about Teenage pregnancy and Gender Based Violence. The talented female emcee has shared the stage with artists like Hip Hop Pantsula (S.A) and Symbiz (GER) and Digital Rebels (ZIM).
