Make up your mind. Driving out of town in a lost moment. Thinking it all over. Leaving your phone at home. Looking for clarity. Making decisions. That’s what The Dropout Patrol sound like. The four Berliners around singer Jana Sotzko craft a type of decelerated post-rock. Stoic bass lines, minimal almost jazzy drums, fragmented chords, cautious distortion. Jana’s articulate words create a peculiar intimacy, an unusual sincerity, sometimes she seems to just be talking at you. Suspense is subtle, careful speed-ups, a whispering choir, controlled dropouts. The result is what only music can create, a contradictory blend of emotions: Troubled yet composed, serene yet tense.
