From the circles of the Janus crew – the cultural collective which made the jump from Neukölln underground club Chester’s via New York Times to a series of events at Berghain – springs producer J’Kerian aka. Lotic. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Lotic is today operating out of Berlin and with his apocalyptic productions and eclectic DJ-sets he has rapidly left a mark on the city’s electronic music scene. The song of praise sounds far beyond our city limits: Fact Magazine called his mix Damsel in Distress «…one of 2014’s most important mix tapes», his recent EP Heterocetera (out on Tri Angle) got a rare 8.0 from Pitchfork, and now, with his remix of Björk’s «NotGet», Lotic’s work must now be labeled as a post-insiders’ tip. Let’s trust the hype because Lotic’s soundscapes are indeed something unique. Lotic mixes the rhythms of hip hop and RnB with dystopian and technoid fragments, hacking into the flow, chopping and rearranging the elements. He respecfully dips a rough street sound into his very own futuristic jelly, throws in a Beyoncé sample, both triggering and transcending the expectations of what is so broadly called electronic dance music. Lotic’s performances are a hybrid between live concert and DJ-set: spectacular, unsettling, danceable.
