Antoine93. His name belongs in an AOL chat room or sprayed on a New York subway car. With so much instinct for the cultural signifiers of the 90s it is hard to believe that the 93 indeed stands for Antoine’s birth year. Antoine Lahaie, from Montréal, Quebec, is one of the few originally francophone artists who has successfully snuk into the anglo-dominated music scene of the city. When asked about his influences and role models Antoine Lahaie names Cher and Céline Dion. He wears a sparkling earring and flap trousers made by Tommy Hilfiger without irony. His performance is ready for the mega-disco. At first glance one could mistake his perfectly produced pop music for the product of a commercial hit factory, but, intended or not: the subversion is in the details. His new EP, released with Berlin-based record label Mansions & Millions, features hyper-euphoric tracks such «Extra Strong» or «I like 2 Get High». Too much is the motto: 2 much fun, 2 much excess. With digital means of production and a huge talent for huge songwriting, the 22-year-old turns the dominant conditions upside down and declares himself a super star.
