Aldous Harding

2015

Good news for those who wistfully remember Tiny Ruins play a jam-packed Z-Bar three years ago. The distant isles of New Zealand send us another great voice with even more great songs: Aldous Harding from the port of Littleton, coordinates: 43° 36’ S, 172° 43’ O, inhabitants: 2,859. The vicinity to the sea is what you can hear in Harding’s music, her guitar play is minimal, her voice almost a bit hoarse. Her songs sound bleak, sombre and honest, «gothic fairytales» is the term that Hanna Claynails Harding uses herself to describe what she creates. Although indisputably reminiscent of 1970s folk music by artists like of Vashti Bunyan, Sybille Baier or Linda Perhacs, Harding’s songs are much more than stylized reverie: «Timeless,» an adjective not too closely related to pop-music, comes to mind, with her arrangements so stripped and her voice so bare. Aldous Harding, a most exceptional representative of a spreading phenomena called kiwi-folk.
