André Uhl

2018

Inviting a specialist in all things future to a festival edition whose theme is “Forever”: piece of cake. Finding a specialist in all things future who also makes compelling music: a little trickier. Luckily, though, we came across the Berlin musician and (duh) futurologist André Uhl. Although Uhl’s sound prophecies are rather grim in nature (and you can say that again), the title of his debut album, I hope the roof flies off, and I get sucked up into space, also marks a certain penchant for euphoria. Although the white noise, moody arpeggios, and eerie melodies suggest a concealed past, they simultaneously draft a glowing, alluring vision of the future. With this gesture, the entirely electronically produced tracks, which Uhl performs live in front of a projection of deep blue, probably belong to the recently manifested genre of ultra-romanticism. Under the guidance of Andre Uhl, nostalgia, loneliness, and thirst for the future become one; human fantasies and artificial intelligence enter into a symbiosis at once threatening and seductive. Uhl’s post-human sound will doubtless stand out as one of the most extravagant, abstract, experimental moments of our festival.
