The hypnotic, repetitive sound structures built by percussionist Andrea Belfi mirror an idea of infinity. This Berlin-based Italian artist fine-tunes atmospheric sound worlds located at the intersection of pop, ambient, and minimal music. In his performances, he uses both a drum set and a synthesizer, magically fusing the organic, spartan tonalities of the former into the electronic textures of the latter. Despite all of this structural freedom, though, Belfi stays close to popular music in both praxis and aesthetic. He releases momentary flashes of electronic club music, then transports the listener via cinematic soundscapes into a dark universe in which rhythms become space capsules and harmonies become stardust. Belfi invokes landscapes of dreaming and longing, and refers to the imaginary future utopias and dystopias of science-fiction film and literature. Belfi is active in Berlin’s avant-garde scene, both as a solo artist and in collaborations. In 2016, on tour as part of the trio Nonkeen alongside Nils Frahm, Andrea’s explosive drum set was widely and publicly praised as the most memorable moment of a concert at London’s Barbican Center. Belfi’s latest album, Ore, was released on the Berlin label Float in 2017.
