Catnapp left her native Buenos Aires for Berlin, and trained pop aficionados might conclude that this intercontinental relocation was inspired by her musical influences—a “blind” listener to her tracks might place the music in the Berlin of the noughties, among Rio Club, Peaches, Fisherspooner, Ladytron, and Miss Kitten. The Argentinian songstress’s reduced productions often consist of little more than a bass line, a beat, and a minimalist “sprechstimme” that smoothly crosses border control into the territory of rap. However, Catnapp is also capable of loftier, more grandiose achievements, and that’s sporadically but persuasively clear. In the track “Come,” the sprightly first half gives way to a melancholy pop lament; the acoustic version of another song, “Stop,” exchanges electronics for folky guitar picking that sets the stage for autumnal slow-dancing in a mint-green ski suit (see the video). As the tracks roll by, this musician’s versatility becomes increasingly astounding. For those of you not registered for Good Pop Music 101, we’d highly recommend devoting an evening to Catnapp’s myriad music videos as a stand-in.
