It took exactly 3 minutes and 34 seconds until we became fans of Dinner, because 3 minutes and 34 seconds is the lengths of Dinner’s video clip to Girl, the title track of his latest EP. The film shows Anders Rhedin (the Danish part-time one-eyed creator of Dinner) and two odd companions as clownish wannabe pop stars rehearsing the track in a domestic rumpus room. Besides the absurdity a certain uncanniness lies in this digital and blurry performance. Something occult and ritual with a rather gloomy undertone. This undertone roots in Dinner’s remarkably Nico-esque voice. Way to low, one might think, the ghostly chansonnier croons stories of love, death, girls and Los Angeles, the city in which he himself has lived and whose sons Ariel Pink and John Maus have not left his sound unaffected.
