The Berlin band Sun Worship, the only black metal band to have ever played at Torstraßen Festival, is lauded even in less gloomy circles as a musical focal point – they occupy the oh-so-spectacular border grounds between archaic grunts and avant-garde calculation. Felix-Florian Tödloff, the band’s guitarist, translates the meditative and simultaneously deafening noise for which Sun Worship is known into significantly more health-friendly forms of ambient music. Under the name Sferics he creates layers of atmospheric ambient pads using electric guitar; under his North-German birth name he collages magnetic tape and modular synthesis into minimalist sound spectra. In the context of the exhibition Mattresses of Berlin and as a part of the festival line-up, Tödloff presents a two-hour live sound installation – a site-specific soundtrack dedicated to mattresses and their photographic replicas.
