FFX

2017

The concept of the romantic couple as a band module has always carried special psycho-erotic weight; prominent test cases include John & Yoko, Kim & Thurston, and Win & Regine. FFX or Gaja & Lucijan, two transplants from Ljubljana, are this city’s hottest new pop lovebirds. Their second EP, whose title Vodka Something Gin With Whatever is as result-oriented as it is result-indifferent, was a collection of hypnotic, groovy tracks centered on the theme of “you and me.” The songs are marked by a zeitgeist-cued reappearance of nearly forgotten genres like booty bass and electroclash, and embroidered by Gaja’s cool, androgynous speaking voice. And that’s just the music—the duo’s style and attitude are also fundamental elements of the Gesamtkunstwerk that is FFX. Their Instagram page, a love story in photos—think bare skin, coconuts, laptops, and bloody teeth—is a case study in post-digital style iconography. After the duo’s charming TSF premiere at our warm-up event with the Berlin avant-party series TRADE, we couldn’t resist inviting them back for the festival. Hottt!
