Hair & Beauty might be considered both a sort of swinger within the Berlin music scene and a grand reunion between several TSF darlings. The project’s gravitational center is Daniel Boyle, who we know as Classic Muscle or for his performances with Jaakko Eino Kalevi or Skiing. Add to the mix no less than Joe and Uri of Mother of the Unicorn, Lukas of Fenster, and Caroline aka Maud. The project’s latest album is called John at Home 1988, and that describes the aesthetic quite precisely – it’s a collection of secret recordings that are more early-90s than 21st-century. It’s proto-indie from a bedroom in Neukölln, but it channels the spirit of said 1990s- Seattle or Portland – faux wood paneling, cigarette smoke, evergreens, rain – more than of Britz or Mitte. The Hair & Beauty collective makes dreamy, lone-wolf music of astoundingly high melodic & lyrical quality. We’d heartily recommend the band’s Bandcamp site, whose two listed albums have rescued many a rainy Sunday – whether in Berlin or in Seattle.
