That a group named Image Ctrl keeps an eye on its own visual identity comes as no surprise. But the way the Berlin-based rap collective presents itself isn’t at all usual in this line of business: No photos have ever surfaced of the group’s six members, which is to be understood as not only secretive behavior but also programmatic rationale: «The reason we don’t put out press pictures or show up in our videos is that we wanted to put the music and visuals front and center, instead of trying to build another rap personality hype around the MC and no good album was ever the product of one person». Word! Because what we hear and see does function perfectly well without the usual mug shots. The MC’s got more flow than the Spree River could ever dream of, the bass- and trap-heavy productions sound super fresh and the video to «Push» takes place in a surreal and mystical world. It is not by chance that the first album is called «Better Living through Image Ctrl» – These guys got it all under… you guessed it.
