«When you close your Eyes / Take me into your dreams» – washed out, sleepy dream rap from Canada. Wiping the sleep out of her eyes Emma C aka Magic Island writes love songs at dawn, odes to late hours and awakening sunups. With her debut EP Magic Island celebrates the both decay and reconstruction. Bliss meets hangover, hooklines disappear into «I wonder if we make it through another Night of the Sunset». 2017 Super Sunday
Emma Czerny’s artist endeavors, on the other hand, unfold on local, familiar turf: named after the Neukölln dive bar Zauberinsel, the Canadian Berliner’s project revels in dreamy, otherwordly spheres. Back in 2014 she played Torstraßen Festival with only a small repertoire revolving around the hit “Baby Blu” under her belt; this year she’ll appear on the big TSF Sunday stage together with the heavenly mini-choir The Angels to present her debut album, Like Water. The album’s title aptly describes the music of Magic Island—she bathes her listeners in a range of moods, generates waves, dives in, swims to the bottom, cools and warms as contrasting pools would, and in the process sounds like the bittersweet, dawn-kissed residue of one of those long Neukölln nights (during which not all clauses of the Federal Narcotics Act have been respected).
