The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band

2016

The birth years of Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band’s members range from 1941 to 1990. Started by the DJs Maft Sai and Chris Menist in Bangkok as a party series and soon after manifested in the form of compilations (“The Sound of Siam”) on the niche labels Finders Keepers and Soundway, the six-piece live band turns heads today opening for Damon Albarn and playing at festivals like Glastonbury and Field Day. In the ensemble, Gamma Perdtanon, who acts as the “Jimi Hendrix of the Phin” (a type of thai lute) and the 75-year-old Hawaii Kaewsombat, who plays the Khaen (a kind of east-Asian harmonica) are two absolute experts of the fast-paced Mo Lam, a traditional style from Laos and the northeast Isan region of Thailand. It is in Mo Lam that the Thai, with a pinch of psychedelia and a dash of local pop, weave continuity between the 60s and 70s and the 21st Century. We’re particularly nostalgic about a frenzied concert in the late Neukölln venue NK (RIP), and now it’s our pleasure to welcome this unstintingly danceable, multigenerational project back to Berlin. #protips: magnesium helps to fight muscle cramps.
