Right now the ex-pat hotel formally known as the City of Berlin is lucky to host one of New York City’s most prolific indie-heads: Toby Goodshank. As the guitar player of the legendary Moldy Peaches he contributed significantly to the antifolk hype of the early 2000s. But both before and long after the success alongside Adam Green and Kimya Dawson Toby Goodshank kept pursuing an abundant solo-career. Under “Partial Discography” his Wikipedia entry currently lists 29 releases, 14 in the last 5 years alone, many of them published on CD-Rs, on the web and on his own imprint Unicornsounds. Goodshank’s sound is milder today and the arrangements are more complex than before. On his new album Minus Días we hear a cousinhood with Fleetwood Mac, John Cale, and of course Jonathan Richman. Goodshank’s notorious innuendo and surreal humor are still present, anti-qualities also reflected in the paintings of the recently founded art-collective 3MB consisting of Toby Goodshank, Adam Green and Macaulay Culkin.
