AG Form

2018

As an alternative to neoliberal blood doping, the Lichtenberger Band AG Form use their new album Commons to explore the idea of gathering places, of places where people meet and where music emerges as a shared, identity- and action-generating practice. Accordingly, their song titles bear the names of various public gathering points, e.g. “Kalek” (a municipality in the Czech Republic), “Detmold” (a city in Germany’s Ostwestfalen-Lippe region) or “Shuttle Bus” (probably not serving the commute between Kalek and Detmold). The sound carrying listeners to these various destinations follows both collaborative and electronic models. The guitar-guitar-bass-drums instrumentation (there’s no singing) susses out jazzy timbres; the harmonious give-and-take between band members creates a dynamic that’s both relaxed and precise. Visually, the band also centers its energy on the key branding principles of cooperation and exchange, stages itself as a team of energetic young entrepreneurs, and thus satirizes the principles and aesthetics of the ever-growing Berlin start-up scene. AG Form cleverly situates itself between the two possible meanings of the capital letters in its name: Arbeitsgemeinschaft (Working Group) und Aktiengesellschaft (Corporation).
