Argh!? What a band! Where is this coming from?! Raw melodies, deadpan lyrics and thrashing guitars like you’d remember from groups in the 90s on labels like Sub Pop or Kill Rock Stars. From bands like Sleater-Kinney, Mudhoney or Sonic Youth. There was something like this once in Hamburg, Berlin has Mutter, had The Aim of Design is to Define space, whose t-shirts were always a little more popular than the music. Behind Banque Allemande are three guys in aloha shirts answering to enigmatic names like Markus, Harald and Olaf. The Berlin-based trio is releasing their music on the Californian label Scott Soriano Records and their latest album is curiously called «Willst Du Chinese sein, musst Du die ekligen Sachen essen». On this record they stagger through seasick instrumental parts, they survive noisy tidal waves but they always see a 4/4 time beat on the horizon. They cast a net full of buzzwords that would make a fine collection of absurd quotes. So where’s the Spex cover story? Banque Allemande are provocative, intelligent and loud. Quote unquote: «Und im Radio… läuft Radiomusik.» («And the radio… plays radiomusic.»)
