Tsf_opening_instaDas Torstraßen Festival 2018 beginnt mit einer langen Nacht im Kunsthaus ACUD.

Im Club präsentieren The Hole Boys einen brandneuen Neukölln Country Club, eine musikalische Revue mit Special Guests nicht nur aus dem aus dem Festival-Line-Up:

Danach gibt es Karaoke mit dem Team der Berliner DIY-Publikation The Chop und dann, als wäre das nicht schon genug, wird es einen ersten Einblick in die Installation von Tianzhuo Chen in der ACUD Galerie geben, die sich dann am Samstag in eine multimediale Performance verwandelt.

Revolving around this year’s festival motto »Forever« we would like to invite you to a public talk discussing and debating how a seemingly eternal present, a capitalist realism of injustices, binaries, ecological degradation and cultural setbacks can be questioned, tackled, and inverted towards a new kind of realism. Through the means of music, what are the notions, sounds, and dreams of a (much) different future?

tsf18_filmsZum ersten Mal präsentieren wir am Samstag, den 9. Juni auch ein kleines Filmprogramm! Kuratiert von Videokills-Gründerin und Musikerin JJ Weihl (Fenster / Discovery Zone) werden im ACUD Kino zwei Musikdokumentarfilme gezeigt – Conny Plank: The Potential of Noise und Queercore: Hot to Punk a Revolution. Die Regisseure Stephan Plank und Yony Leyser und die Produzentin Milena Fessmann werden für Q&As anwesend sein.

This year Torstraßen Festival will be presenting a petit film program during the festival hosted by Videokills founder and Berlin based artist and musician JJ Weihl (Fenster + Discovery Zone). We will be featuring two music based documentaries which will be presented at Acud Kino on June 9th, 2018 with special live and in person Q&As with then director Stephan Plank and producer Milena Fessman of the film Conny Plank: The Potential of Noise and Yony Leyser director of Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution.

Konrad „Conny“ Plank (1940–1987) war einer der innovativsten Klanggestalter und Musikproduzenten seiner Zeit. Die Aufnahmen, die ab den 60er Jahren in seinem sagenumwobenen Tonstudio in Wolperath nahe Köln entstanden sind, haben die Musikwelt revolutioniert. Er war der Pionier des Krautrocks und Wegbereiter der elektronisch geprägten Popmusik. Bands und Künstler wie NEU!, Brian Eno, David Bowie, Ultravox und die Eurythmics nahmen mit ihm auf und betonen noch heute den Einfluss, den er auf ihre Musik hatte. Ohne Plank hätte Gianna Nannini wohl für immer auf Englisch gesungen, und wäre ihm ein gewisser Bono sympathischer gewesen, würde „Joshua Tree“ von U2 heute ganz anders klingen. Als Conny im Alter von nur 47 Jahren starb, war sein Sohn Stephan gerade mal 13 Jahre alt. 25 Jahre später hat er sich zusammen mit Co-Regisseur Reto Caduff auf die Suche nach dem Mann gemacht, den er als Kind oft nur hinter dem Mischpult erlebte. Zugleich wurde es auch die Suche nach dem künstlerischen Vermächtnis seines Vaters. Er hat sich mit Connys alten Freunden und Weggefährten getroffen: mit Annette Humpe und den Scorpions, mit Gianna Nannini, Devo, Ultravox und vielen mehr. Private, größtenteils unveröffentlichte Archivaufnahmen, wechseln sich mit persönlichen Interviews ab, in denen die Musiker_innen Einblicke in Connys akribische und höchst einfühlsame Arbeitsweise gewähren. Das emotionale Porträt des legendären Conny Plank wird so auch zu einer faszinierenden Reise durch die nationale und internationale Popmusikgeschichte der 70er und 80er Jahre.

Konrad ’Conny‘ Plank is undoubtedly one of the most innovative sound designers of his time. The recordings realized in his sound studio near Cologne between the 60s and 80s, revolutionized the music world. He was the pioneer of ’Krautrock‘ and paved the way for the revolutions of electronic and pop music respectively. Bands and artists who were fathered by the sound wizard (mostly before they became world famous) all agree that their careers would have been different without the talents of Conny Plank. Kraftwerk, Neu!, Can, Whodini, Brian Eno, DAF, Gianna Nannini, Ultravox and the Eurithmics are just some to be named. Conny Plank died much too early aged 47. For his wife, the actress Christa Fast, and his 13 year old son Stephan, he left behind a sound studio known near to everywhere. 25 years later his son embarks on a journey to find his father, his importance and his impact. Because all these musicians know Stephan from a young age from the studio, this film brings an unusually intimate and emotional insight to the artists, their work with Conny Plank and all that defines music production. The documentary THE POTENTIAL OF NOISE is the search for the person and producer Conny Plank, a journey through music history, a son getting to know his father and a soundtrack that has influenced millions of music fans over three decades.

Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution erzählt die Geschichte jener lose verbundenen Gruppe von nordamerikanischen Punk-Künstler_innen, die in den 1980er und 90er Jahren ihre queeren Identitäten radikal ins Zentrum der eigenen Arbeiten rückten – und sich damit nicht nur gegen die damals von heterosexuellen Männern dominierte und latent homophobe Punk-Szene auflehnten, sondern auch gegen den allzu angepassten schwulen Mainstream. Regisseur Yony Leyser („William S. Burroughs – A Man Within“, „Desire Will Set You Free“) lässt dazu die schillernden Schlüsselfiguren der Bewegung zur Wort kommen: die Filmemacher_innen Bruce LaBruce und G.B. Jones, die Musiker_innen Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Jody Bleyle (Team Dresch) und Kathleen Hana (Bikini Kill), ihren schamlosen Wegbereiter John Waters – und viele mehr. Künstler_innen wie Beth Ditto und Peaches erzählen, wie die Bewegung ihr Verständnis von queerem Leben und Denken geprägt hat, das sich von allen normativen Einschränkungen löst. Filmclips, Konzertausschnitte und Aufnahmen der spektakulärsten Aktionen dokumentieren das vielschichtige Schaffen der Szene. Leyser mitreißendes Szene-Porträt schließt nicht nur eine klaffende Lücke innerhalb der nicht- heterosexuellen Geschichtsschreibung, es ist auch ein wilder Appell gegen jede Form der falschen Anpassung.

A documentary on Queercore, the cultural and social movement that began as an offshoot of punk and was distinguished by its discontent with society’s disapproval of the gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgender communities.Interviewees discuss homophobia, gender, feminism, AIDS, assimilation, sex, and, of course, art. The extensive participant list includes Bruce LaBruce, G.B. Jones, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, John Waters, Justin Vivian Bond, Lynn Breedlove, Silas Howard, Pansy Division, Penny Arcade, Kathleen Hanna, Kim Gordon, Deke Elash, Tom Jennings, Team Dresch, and many more. Both films will be presented at Acud Cinema on June 9th 2018 with special live and in person Q&As with director Stephan Plank and producer Milena Fessman of the film Conny Plank: The Potential of Noise as well as Yony Leyser director of Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution. Strauss moderates a discussion with the artists Anika (UK/BLN) and AWA (African Woman Arise / Zimbabwe) about how environments — both physical and political — affect and influence the creation of their music, whether it be through words or music, meaning or mood. In the current political moment we find ourselves in, where does an artist find herself? What exactly is an artist’s relation to a social politics — does taking a stance in one’s music, advance a cause or turn it into an object to exploit?

Moderated by D.Strauss, freelance journalist and long time festival supporter.

Annika Henderson is a musician, poet and artist who rose to fame as ANIKA with two highly acclaimed eponymous records (Recorded with Geoff Barrow of Portishead and his band Beak>, released on Stones Throw in the US), and was touring the world. She is well known as a DJ too, hosts a radio program on BCR – Berlin Community Radio, is seen and heard in experimental cinema and collaborates with a variety of Berlin, London, or Mexico City based artists and musicians among them Jandek, Michael Rother (Neu!), Andreas Reihse of Kreidler, T.Raumschmiere (Sleeping Pills and Habits), Doireann O’Malley, Ricardo Domeneck, Stine Omar / Max Boss (EASTER), or Yann Tiersen. She also recently returns from a residency in Tehran, IR where she collaborated with Berlin-based video artist, Phillip Geist for a live video mapping projection, as well as performed at the renowned Tadaex festival. She is due to play ATP Iceland in July.

»Awakhiwe Sibanda who is known on stage as A.W.A (African Women Arise) is a 24-year-old female emcee and a vocalist from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. She started rapping in 2012 and released songs in Ndebele about Teenage pregnancy and Gender Based Violence. The talented female emcee has shared the stage with artists like Hip Hop Pantsula (S.A) and Symbiz (GER) and Digital Rebels (ZIM). She is part of the music congress and festical „Urban Africa – My Future in 2020“, taking place at Club Bahnof Ehrenfeld in Cologne on the 28-30th of September 2016.«

AWA will also perform at the after show party at Acud Club.

Juni, direkt um 14 Uhr, könnt Ihr mehr über die künstlerischen Herangehensweisen der auf dem Festival auftretenden KünstlerInnen Darkstar, DJ Paypal, Princess Century und Ziúr erfahren. Das Gespräch „Express Yourself: Finding your style in electronic music“ geht der Frage nach, wie sich MusikerInnen heute durch die endlosen Möglichkeiten und die digitale Allgegenwart navigieren, um letztlich – inmitten des Sound-Meers – ihre eigene Stimme zu finden.

Die Journalistin Lisa Blanning moderiert das Gespräch im Studio der zentralen Festival-Location ACUD. Express Yourself: Finding your style in electronic music
Technology has created a vast array of possibilities for making electronic music. Simultaneously, it can also have a standardizing effect, especially in the realm of presets. How do you navigate both endless choices and digital ubiquity to create your own voice amidst a sea of sounds? Music journalist Lisa Blanning moderates a panel with artists Darkstar, DJ Paypal, Princess Century, and Ziúr for a first-person discussion on shaping an individual sound using the most comprehensive and widespread of tools, the computer.

The conversation will be in English and is organized in cooperation with Ableton. The conversation takes place at ACUD’s studio, within the central festival venue ACUD. Pick up your ticket, get a coffee and start the festival day with meeting some great artists and getting some insights into their creative process.
