Ausgewählte Einzelausstellungen: Swiss Institute, New York; Galerie Max Mayer, Düsseldorf; Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn und Studio for Propositional Cinema, Düsseldorf. Letzte Gruppenausstellungen: More Konzeption / Conception Now im Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen; Leben mit Pop. Eine Reproduktion des Kapitalistischen Realismus in der Kunsthalle Düsseldorf und im Artists Space, New York.

Using their immediate environment as a point of departure for their feature length films, the artists Henning Fehr and Philipp Rühr have investigated various social systems and their inherent contradictions. In the background of their work, there is a persistent question about how smaller communities can shape or even transform a society at large. In The Production Line of Happiness (2014) for example, the artists filmed their own class at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf: While the students ruminate on the (im)possibilities of revolutionary resistance, the camera is already underway at an art fair, where the works of these very students – including those by Fehr, Rühr and their former professor Christopher Williams – are being offered for sale. Even in their most recent trilogy Polyrhythm Technoir (2014 – 2015), which focuses on the socio-political landscape of the techno scene and its conditions of production, the entanglement of art and commerce is ubiquitous. Yet there is also another thread connecting the works: The films don’t tell stories in any traditional sense. Rather

they opt for atmospheres and situations instead of events, long takes instead of quick edits, and silences and soundscapes instead of dialogue. In this way, their films resonate with the tradition of Structuralist Cinema from the Sixties as well as the practices of so called Slow or Contemporary Contemplative Cinema. Through their emphasis on duration and their anti- representative approach, the works generate a sense of actual lived experience. One has to endure the pain of successive edits which refuse to consolidate into a single resolution and apprehend the dissolution of the subject’s boundaries as a form of openness. Only then can what Nadin Mai calls “breathing with a film” set in, and the complexities and depths of what is not shown come to the fore.

The exhibition at ACUD is the most comprehensive presentation of Fehr and Rühr’s artistic practice to date. Besides the trilogy Polyrhythm Technoir, one of their very first films My Language is an Unpaved Road (Crystal Bridges) (2013) will be shown as well. Two more works created in recent years supplement the selection. The works, dealing with inclusion and exclusion, mainstream and underground, match out-standingly with a place like ACUD.

Thanks to the interplay of art, music and discourse and with its diverse protagonists, the Kunsthaus addresses different audiences and offers a unique context as well as an exceptional source of inspiration for contemporary artists.
Henning Fehr (born 1985 in Erlangen, Germany) and Philipp Rühr (born 1986 in Brühl, Germany) live and work in Cologne, Germany. Selected solo exhibitions include Swiss Institute, New York; Galerie Max Mayer, Düsseldorf; Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn; VersaceVersaceVersace, Miami and Studio for Propositional Cinema, Düsseldorf.

Talk #2: Space, Place, Politics w/ Anika + AWA

anika_awaSpace, Place, Politics: How Does One’s Environment Shape an Artist’s Worldview?
In cooperation with BIMM Berlin

Acud Studio, Veteranenstraße 21
Saturday, 16:00 – 17:00

Critic D. Strauss moderates a discussion with the artists Anika (UK/BLN) and AWA (African Woman Arise / Zimbabwe) about how environments — both physical and political — affect and influence the creation of their music, whether it be through words or music, meaning or mood. In the current political moment we find ourselves in, where does an artist find herself? What exactly is an artist’s relation to a social politics — does taking a stance in one’s music, advance a cause or turn it into an object to exploit?

Moderated by D.Strauss, freelance journalist and long time festival supporter.

Express Yourself: Finding your style in electronic music
Technology has created a vast array of possibilities for making electronic music. Simultaneously, it can also have a standardizing effect, especially in the realm of presets. How do you navigate both endless choices and digital ubiquity to create your own voice amidst a sea of sounds? Music journalist Lisa Blanning moderates a panel with artists DarkstarDJ PaypalPrincess Century, and Ziúr for a first-person discussion on shaping an individual sound using the most comprehensive and widespread of tools, the computer.

The conversation will be in English and is organized in cooperation with Ableton. The conversation takes place at ACUD’s studio, within the central festival venue ACUD. The Night Before: Pop Montréal & Torstrassen Festival present Wake Island + L.A. Foster
June 3rd, 8pm
Acud Macht Neu
Veteranenstraße 21

Building on the success of last years collaborating, Pop Montréal and Torstarssenfestival have teamed up again, this time to bring you a free show featuring two Pop curated acts: Wake Island and L.A. Foster.

L.A. Foster: After growing up in Edmonton, Foster has spent the past ten years living in Buenos Aires and Montreal. Playing with these geographical contrasts, Foster’s premiere release is a mix of emotion ranging from southern heat to gritty cold-weather-break-ups. Blending cumbia, reggaeton, and house; her mix of samples, melodic hooks and cutting vocals provides the perfect setting for a melancholic dance party.

Wake Island: Wake Island is an electronic duo formed by Lebanese musicians Philippe Manasseh and Nadim Maghzal and based in Montreal and New York City. The band fearlessly blends electronic dance music with indie rock songwriting to create a positive, uplifting experience. Their new album, OUT, was mostly self-recorded in isolated cabins across the Quebec Eastern Townships and mixed at Montreal’s Breakglass Studios with Jace Lasek (Suuns, Wolf Parade). Through this beautiful and eclectic collection of songs, the band encourage us to stay positive and to open up to the world around us. OUT comes out on April 29th through Oh Hi, an artist collective they co-founded in Montreal. Their live show echoes bands like Caribou, Moderat and Beach House and is sure to elevate your spirit and make you dance.

TSF’16 Warm-Up #3 – The Seth Bogart Show

warm-up_seth

The Seth Bogart Show
+ Miserable Lesbians
Monday, May 16th, 8pm
Privatclub Berlin

Tickets: powerline.tickets.de/de/events/7235-Seth_Bogart

Is it getting hot in here or is that just me? It’s hot, right? Am I feeling the Bern or is this another Torstraßen Festival 2016 warm-up show? The later, the former, any, all. Point is, Torstraßen FestivalPowerline Agency and Shameless/Limitless are teaming up to proudly present weirdo ripper Seth Bogart (aka Hunx And His Punx) perform THE SETH BOGART SHOW.

Support comes in the form of Miserable Lesbians, a stoner garage project of 19 year California transplant Lafayette Vanderkin-Jus. Tickets on sale now.

BURGER RECORDS is excited to announce the official debut album from Seth Bogart, the former frontman for iconic DIY acts Hunx And His Punx and Gravy Train! The genre-twisting pop homage features guest appearances from Kathleen Hanna, Tavi Gevinson, Clementine Creevy (Cherry Glazerr), Chela and is co-written and produced by long-time friend Cole MGN (Julia Holter, Ariel Pink, DâM FunK etc).
Following years of creating and touring with his punk projects, Seth’s reinvention began when he moved to Los Angeles in 2012 and started to focus on his visual art. Amongst other things, he opened his Wacky Wacko store, based on his extremely popular clothing line, collaborated on a special limited edition collection with Saint Laurent and had installations at various galleries and museums, including 356 S. Mission Road and MoCA Geffen Contemporary, all the while still working on new music.
With new surroundings and inspiration, a laptop, guitar, microphone, a $50 keyboard and help from Cole MGN, Seth’s new sound was born. Inspired by music he grew up loving – Radio Disney, Broadcast, 80s French Pop like Lio and Plastic Bertrand, Le Tigre, Nina Hagen and Kraftwerk – the new sound is a welcomed adventurous step in a completely new direction. Previously, Seth shared the first single „Eating Makeup“, featuring a vocal assist from the legendary Kathleen Hanna. The song is based on an episode of „My Strange Addiction“ in which the subject is literally addicted to eating makeup. The tongue-in-cheek video directed by JJ Stratford (Telefantasy Studios) shows off Seth’s friends eating makeup but also acts as a Pee Wee’s Playhouse-meets-Liquid Television-inspired social commentary on the effects of the beauty industry. Today, Seth shares new track „Forgotten Fantazy“ that shows his more somber and contemplative side.
