7 Jahre Torstraßenfestival – das verflixte siebte Jahr. Wir müssen reden. Denn irgendwas juckt, irgendwas kratzt, irgendwas stimmt hier nicht. It’s the 7 year itch! And, it’s an itchy time, isn’t it? Populismus, Kapitalismus, Gentrifizierung, Diskriminierung, Überwachungsstaat, Filter Bubbles, a-l-l-e-s geht den Bach runter! Und wir so? Musikfestival. Jahr für Jahr. Nice. Aber, was bringt das eigentlich? Und geht nicht eigentlich immer alles den Bach runter, irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann? In Mali, in China, in Mitte? Da hätte man auch schon früher durchdrehen können. Oder sollen. Oder müssen! Also. Da ist sie, DIE KRISE, und klopft an die Tür der vermeintlichen Komfortzone.

Tock, tock. »Ja hallo, Torstraßenfestival hier, Entschuldigung, wir machen so ein nettes Event und würden gerne mit all dem nichts zu tun haben, ginge das?« Nein. Nochmal.

Tock, tock. »Ja hallo, Torstraßenfestival hier, so werden wir die Welt nicht ändern, wir schmeißen hin!« Nein. Auch nicht.

Also, okay, let’s try this again! Mit unseren Mitteln. Ein Festival als offene Versuchsanordnung. Ein Experiment aus Pop-Musik, Stadt und Welt. Aus viel zu vielen Konzerten an ganz verschiedenen Orten, aus all den Sounds, Charakteren und Identitäten, die uns begeistern. Mit Zugereisten und Einheimischen, mit Gästen und Nachbarn. Mit unserer Community, Eurer Community und vor allem: der Community. Jedes Mal ein bisschen neu und jedes Mal ziemlich offen für alles und alle, die ein bisschen anders ticken. Weil Musik mehr ist als Vernunft und Logik, weil Musik etwas kann, was dazwischen liegt, weil sie eine Stimme gibt und verbindet.

Natürlich bleibt es kompliziert. It is what it is. Aber im Zweifel für den Zweifel, für die Auseinandersetzung und für das Dilemma! Und für Musik – mit Harmonien und Dissonanzen, Zwischentönen und Störgeräuschen.

TSF’17 – feel the itch!

Torstraßen Festival turns 7 years old  — yes, it’s that so-called jinxed seventh year! And, indeed we have to talk. Something is on our mind. Something is itching. Something is grating on our nerves; it’s just not quite right. It’s the 7 year itch! 

It sure is an itchy time, isn’t it? Populism, capitalism, gentrification, discrimination, surveillance state, filter bubbles—it seems like literally everything is going down the tubes. And us? Well, year after year we make a solid music festival. Nice, but is it actually of any consequence? And doesn’t everything just go to shit somehow, somewhere, at some point, anyway? In Mali, in China, in Mitte? Could have panicked before, right? Should have! MUST have. So the long-looming CRISIS has arrived, and its knock-knock-knocking on the door of our alleged “comfort zone“.

Knock, knock. “Yeah, hi, Torstraßen Festival here. Um, so we organize this nice little event, and it would be super cool if we could just stay out of all that other stuff. Is that O.K.?” — Nope. Try again.

Knock knock. “Yeah, hi, Torstraßen Festival here. Phew, we can’t change the world, so we’re just gonna throw in the towel, alright? What’s the point?” — Still nope. Strike two. 

Ok. Let’s try this again, with our own means. Creating a music festival as an experimental arrangement, a laboratory with an alchemic reaction between music, city, and world. Far too many concerts, at various different venues, with all of the sounds, characters and identities that excite us: guest performers who’ve come in from out of town and local performers from the basement next door. Our community, your community, and, most importantly, THE community. Every time a little bit different, every time open to everything and everyone that goes slightly against the grain. Because music is more than reason and logic, and because music is capable of something that lies between — it gives a voice and connects us. 

Of course it’s still complicated. It is what it is. But here’s to doubt, here’s to debate, here’s to dilemma! And here’s to music – with harmonies and dissonances, with nuances, shades, noise and static.

An unser wunderbares Publikum, an alle Künstler*innen, Förderinstitutionen, Partner- und Unterstützer*innen und die teilnehmenden Locations. Und natürlich an unser großartiges Team an den Bühnen, Mischpulten, Türen und Kassen, sowie die vielen freiwilligen Helfer*innen! Ohne Euch kein TSF! DANKE!

Ah geil, so Straßenfest?
Nein. Musikfestival. Unsere Konzerte finden alle in den Festival-Locations statt. Die Straße wird nicht gesperrt. Allerdings lassen sich viele Läden und Restaurants zum Festivaltag etwas Besonderes einfallen. 

Wie, schon am Donnerstag? 
Kairo is Koming! Zum Auftakt spielen am Donnerstag fünf ägyptische Künstler*innen im Roten Salon. Die Shows beginnen um 22 Uhr, nach einem Talk mit den Künstler*innen um 20Uhr. 

Und Freitag? 
Am Freitag gibt es die offizielle Eröffnung mit einem Konzert des Neukölln Country Club feat. Jaakko Eino Kalevi, Itaca, Martha Rose, Helen Fry, und viele mehr im ACUD. Vorher auch ein Talk rund um das Festivalthema mit Steven Warwick, Bosaina und anderen. 

Und Samstag wird’s dann richtig crazy, oder? 
Yup. Am Samstag spielen fast 40 KünstlerInnen in etwa 10 Locations in Berlin-Mitte. Von 14 bis 24 Uhr. Hier das Line-Up. Und da die Tickets. Im ACUD gibt es einen Label-Markt. Und um 24 Uhr beginnt die große After-Show-Party im ACUD. 

Wer spielt wann und wo? 
Hier gibt’s den Zeitplan für Samstag.

Online-Tickets, Festivalbändchen, wie bitte?
Online-Tickets müssen ausgedruckt und am Festivaltag am Info-Stand (am ACUD, Veteranenstraße 21) in ein Armband eingetauscht werden!!! Extrem wichtig. Geöffnet ab 13 Uhr.

14 Uhr? Da schlaf ich ja noch!
Um 14 Uhr geht das Festival los und unser Programm folgt nicht der üblichen Hierarchie nach Popularität. Früh kommen lohnt sich also. Es geht gut los! 

Und was passiert nach 24Uhr? 
Es gibt eine Aftershow-Party im Acud feat. Bass Gang, Nene Hatun, Gil, Brat Star! 5 Euro mit Festivalticket, 10 Euro ohne. Schockt.

Ok, verstanden. Und Sonntag? 
Am Sonntag gibt es ein großes Konzert im Babylon Kino am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Super Sunday mit Perera Elsewhere, Oum Shatt und Magic Island. Tickets hier. 

Können wir mit unserer Bar, unserem Restaurant, unserer Galerie, unserem Laden mitmachen?
Ja, Partycipate! Wenn Ihr anläßlich des Festivals etwas auf die Beine stellt, lasst es uns wissen. Wichtig: Durch das Festival entsteht keine generelle Genehmigung für Aktionen auf der Straße, diese müssen ggf. individuell bei der Stadt eingeholt werden. Soll ich ein Fahrrad mitbringen?
Ja, gute Idee! Mit dem Fahrrad kommt man schnell von einem Konzert zum nächsten.

Kann ich mit den Öffentlichen kommen?
Klar. Mit der U2 zum Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz oder der U8 zum Rosenthaler Platz zum Beispiel. Oder mit der Tram.

Und mit dem Auto?
Nee. Parken in Mitte nervt.

So, this is a street fair?
No, it’s a music festival! All concerts take place inside the festival locations. The street will not be blocked. Nevertheless many shops and restaurants in Torstraße are planning something special along with the festival. Here’s a list of our partycipators. 

Wait, Thursday already? 
Kairo is Koming! On Thursday night five exciting Egyptians artists will perform at Roter Salon. We begin with a talk about their practices and opinions as artists, producers, promoters and educators in Cairo. Doors: 7pm, Talk 8pm, Shows: 10pm.

And Friday?
On Friday the official opening takes place at ACUD! At 8pm we’ll talk to Steven Warwick, Bosaina and others about pop and politics. And 9.30pm you can see Neukölln Country Club feat. Jaakko Eino Kalevi, Itaca, Martha Rose, Helen Fry and many more downstairs in the club. 

Saturday gets really crazy, right? 
Yup. On Saturday nearly 40 artists will perform in about 10 locations in Berlin-Mitte. Shows start at 2pm and end at midnight. Here’s the Line-Up. And here you’ll find tickets. At ACUD we’ll also host a record label market. And ACUD is where the big after show party starts at midnight.

Online tickets? Wristbands? Say what?
Online tickets must be printed out and swapped for wristbands at the information desk (at Acud Club, Veteranenstraße 21) on the day of the festival. This is very important. Open from 1pm. 

2pm? Seriously?
Yes, the festival starts at 2pm, and the program does not follow the usual popularity hierarchy. Better be early! Lots of good stuff happening right from the start. 

What is happening after midnight?
There will be a big party at Acud feat. Bass Gang, Nene Hatun, Gil, Brat Star! Costs 5 Euros with a festival ticket, 10 Euros without. Memorable party. Always.

Ok. Understood. So… Sunday?
On »Super Sunday« there will be a big concert at Babylon Kino at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. With Perera Elsewhere, Oum Shatt and Magic Island. Cool, right? Tickets here. 

Can we take part in Torstraßen Festival with our bar / restaurant / gallery / shop?
Yes, partycipate! If you make something special happen for Torstraßen Festival please let us know. Important: The festival does not grant official permissions to use the street for example. Those permissions must be obtained individually from the city authorities. Contact us via partycipate@torstrassenfestival.de

Shall I bring a bike?
Yes, good idea! A bike is great to quickly get from one concert to the next.

Can I also come by public transport?
Of course. Take the U2 to Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, the U8 to Rosenthaler Platz or the tram. 

By car?
Nah, parking in Mitte sucks.

Mit ihrem Projekt Keøma war die australische Songwriterin Kat Frankie bereits auf dem Torstraßen Festival zu Gast – in diesem Jahr freuen wir uns ganz außerordentlich sie als Gastkuratorin unserer Bühne im Sankt Oberholz gewinnen zu können. Dort stellt Euch Kat vier brillante Acts vor: Berliner Italo-Disco von Itaca, afrodeutschen Rap von Leila Akinyi, Dream-Pop von Highest Sea und grenzüberschreitende Naturgewalten von Fritz Helder. In diesem Sinne: Kat Frankie presents!

With her side project Keøma Australian singer-songwriter Kat Frankie was already once a guest at Torstraßen Festival. This year we’re especially happy to have her on board as a guest curator for our stage at Sankt Oberholz. There Kat will present four brilliant acts: Berlin Italo Disco from Itaca, afro-german Rap by Leila Akinyi, Dream Pop crafted by Highest Sea and the border-crossing force of nature aka. Fritz Helder. Watch out for Kat Frankie presents!

Samstag, der 10. Juni ist das Herz des Torstraßen Festivals. Von 14 Uhr bis Mitternacht umfasst das Line-Up diesmal an 9 Locations fast 40 Acts, und zum ersten Mal findet im Acud Studio der TSF-Labelmarkt mit Labels wie City Slang, PAN, Miasmah und vielen weiteren statt. Wenn die Konzerte vorbei sind laden wir wieder zur großen Aftershow-Party im Acud ein. Um Mitternacht geht es los, mit Live- und DJ-Sets von Bass Gang, Gil, Nene Hatun und Brat Star.

Big Saturday really is the core of Torstraßen Festival and it’s happening on June 10th from 2pm – midnight. This year the line-up consists of nearly 40 artists who will perform in 9 locations all around Torstraße. For the first time there will be a record label market at Acud together with the festival center for tickets, food and drinks. Once the concerts are over the after show party will also happen at Acud from midnight till dawn feat. live and DJ sets by Bass Gang, Gil, Nene Hatun and Brat Star.

Wetter ist immer. Und besonders gut wird es beim diesjährigen Torstraßen Festival. Denn wir freuen uns sehr, die Redaktion des noch relativ jungen Berliner Magazins Das Wetter in diesem Jahr ins Boot zu holen. Vier Acts hat die Redaktion von Das Wetter eingeladen, das Samstags-Programm im Acud Club zu bestreiten. Dabei im Fokus: Sprechgesang aus Berlin, Leipzig und Wien. So freuen wir uns auf den Wedding-Battle-Boy Shacke One, Cloud-Rapperin Hunney Pimp, den Leipziger Art-MC Der Täubling und kurz-vor-Pop-Star Mavi Phoenix aus Wien!

Wetter means weather. And the weather will be perfect for this year’s Torstraßen Festival. Why is that? Because we’ve invited the editorial team of Berlin-based culture magazine Das Wetter to curate this year’s program at Acud Club. So what did they come up with? Battle-rap from Wedding (Shacke One), Cloud-Rap from Vienna (Hunney Pimp), Art-Rap from Leipzig (Der Täubling), and… a soon-to-be-pop-star Mavi Phoenix. Yes, it’s time to dive into some German Sprechgesang, folks!
